Wave Season is that time of year when cruise lines roll out wave after wave of promotions, perks, and irresistible offers. They’re all competing to capture your attention… which means you get the chance to save, spoil yourself a little, and maybe even try a whole new style of cruising.

Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/travel expert and journalist, shares tips for navigating Wave Season.

Tips for Charting the Course for Wave Season

Timing is everything. Wave season has no ‘official’ beginning or end. Watch for offers beginning in January, running into February, and sometimes even into March.

But don’t wait to do your homework and book – to get the best deals, and your top choice of dates, itineraries, ships and even staterooms or suites – booking early is your best bet.

With so many discounts, bundles, and “limited-time offers,” it’s important to understand what each one really means — and how they compare. Not every deal is created equal, and the best choice is always the one that fits you and the way you like to travel.

Work with an expert travel advisor – this is where they earn their stripes. They’ll help you decode the fine print, compare apples to apples, and maximize your cruise dollars.

Here are some of the most common Wave Season incentives — and some insights into making them work for you:

Straight-Up Discounts

Per person vs. per stateroom:
Cruise pricing is based on double occupancy. So, $1,000 off per person means $2,000 off the cabin — but $1,000 off per stateroom works out to $500 per person. Small detail, big difference.

Solo travelers:
Wave Season can be your moment. Single supplements are sometimes reduced — or even waived — meaning you’re not paying the usual “double” to cruise alone.

BOGO / 2-for-1 fares:
These can be great, but compare to regular fares on similar cruise lines to see if you’re actually getting twice the value… or if it’s just clever marketing.

3rd / 4th guests or “Kids Sail Free”:
Fantastic for families — often on family-focused cruise lines. Just remember: it usually applies to guests sharing the same stateroom, so be prepared to get cozy!

Reduced deposits:
Lower deposits don’t change the final price, but they do let you spread payments out — especially on trips 12–18+ months away. That breathing room may even make a nicer stateroom possible, budgeting-wise.

Bonus Value Perks

Complimentary upgrades:
Think of these as an instant discount — you’re paying for one category and staying in one or more categories of staterooms or suites better. Watch for 2-category or better upgrades!

Pre-cruise hotel night:
We always recommend arriving the day before. If it’s included? Even better — fewer worries, less expense.

Onboard credit (OBC):
Sometimes called shipboard credit, this ‘free money’ is great to treat yourself to spa treatments, shore excursions, specialty dining, wine, or a little shopping. Even on “all-inclusive” cruises, there’s always something to splurge on!

Bundles & Added Inclusions

Cruise + airfare:
Often available from major gateways, sometimes with discounted connectors. Great convenience — just ask what’s included, how much choice in route, airline and date you get.

Beverage or dining packages:
These can add big value to non-inclusive lines. And since many cruise lines now bundle them into regular pricing, it’s worth checking whether the promo is truly extra.

Gratuities included:
Daily crew gratuities add up quickly. Having them covered can make your final bill much friendlier. Some cruise lines include tips for their included shore excursions, too!

Wi-Fi:
Internet at sea can get pricey. If it’s included, check how many devices can connect at once.

Shore excursions:
Even one or two included excursions can save a bundle. Tip: Book early after reserving your cruise — popular tours fill fast.

Working it for Wave Season

New to cruising?
This is the perfect time to try that first cruise you’ve been curious about.

Thinking about something different?
Maybe an expedition ship, a small luxury yacht, or switching from the Caribbean to Alaska, the Med, Tahiti — even Antarctica or the Galápagos. Now’s the time to spread your wings!

Ready to treat yourself?
Wave savings can make luxury and ultra-luxury cruise lines surprisingly attainable — especially with inclusions like open bar, tips, and even excursions.

The Bottom Line

Wave Season is full of opportunity — but also plenty of fine print.

A trusted travel advisor can help:

Match you with the right cruise style and cruise line

Compare offers ‘apples to apples’

Get the maximum value for your travel budget

Avoid costly surprises

START YOUR CRUISE TRIP!

Images: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/ travel expert and journalist

All rights reserved. Atlas Ocean Voyages, with its fleet of small, yacht-like ships that also have polar capabilities, has expanded the definition of expedition cruising in new directions with ‘Epicurean Expeditions.’

The ‘classic’ expedition cruise is polar: Antarctica or increasingly, the Arctic. Other remote maritime destinations that have natural or even cultural treasures to discover are also being added to the list of global expedition cruise itineraries for ships equipped with zodiacs for landings off the beaten track of cruising infrastructure.

Epicurean Expeditions combine that spirit of adventure with culinary curiosity. We sailed aboard an Atlas Ocean Voyages Epicurean Expedition cruise from Lisbon, Portugal, to the north coasts of Spain and France – all rich in food, wine and spirits traditions, stories, and flavors.

On this voyage, the expedition team isn’t composed of geologists, naturalists or ornithologists. Instead, the expedition team leader is a ‘Master Foodie,’ who works in tandem with a celebrity guest chef to provide expert insights and context to culinary experiences on shore and lead gastronomic adventures on board.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE as ‘Master Foodie” Mara Papatheodorou shares the magic, signature events and features of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ Epicurean Expedition Cruises

Here are some of the culinary activities from our itinerary:

Lisbon: making Portugal’s famous dessert: custard tarts

Porto, Portugal: shopping in the local market with guest celebrity Chef Ippy Aiona;

Onboard: cooking a dish from market ingredients as a live demonstration during dinner

Onboard: a presentation and tasting by Master Foodie Mara Papatheodorou – the world’s oldest and most widespread sweetener: honey

Vilagarcia de Arousa, Spain: discovering the region's famous, shellfish with destination designations: farmed mussels, and we even joined local women digging in the shallows at low tide for clams

Onboard: Chef Ippy Aiona’s seafood bouillabaisse

Nantes, France: a private tour and tasting of Muscadet wine at Chateau de Goulaine, the oldest commercial winery in the world!

Nantes, France: “Queen of the Salt Marshes:” a tour of the Iron Age seaside salt marshes, learning how to extract salt using millennia-old techniques

Onboard: demonstration by Chef Ippy Aiona about salt as a global culinary tool, not seasoning!

“Beer and Breton Bites” in Brest, France: an exclusive, evening shore excursion just for guests of Atlas World Voyager in the restored, rejuvenated historic docks

Sweet and savory crepes, the signature dish of Brittany and one of the most famous French dishes worldwide

Honfleur, Normandy: The signature spirit of Normandy, apple brandy or Calvados

Onboard: An Atlas Ocean Voyages’ Epicurean Expeditions feature event onboard: the ‘Yachtsman’s Cookoff’, where teams of guests volunteer to compete against each other cooking an unknown, new dish inspired by their voyage.

START YOUR TRIP!

By: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/ travel journalist and expert

All rights reserved. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours made waves recently with its announcement of its new class of Discovery Yacht.

We’ve sailed aboard the existing Scenic Eclipse in both Antarctica and in the Med – literally ‘polar extremes’ in cruising! Here’s a tour of the ship from both cruising points of view – and a taste of what’s to come with Scenic Ikon in 2028!

Did you miss the Scenic Ikon news?

Three years in development, Scenic Ikon is slightly larger than the Eclipse-class ships, accommodating up to 270 guests, and features new amenities while maintaining its ultra-luxury, all-inclusive approach.

Polar and Warm-Water Sailing

The new class of ship remains purpose-built for both warm-water and polar sailing, engineered to be rated Polar Code 6 with an Ice Class 1A Super-strengthened hull.

The Ultimate Expedition ‘Toys’ – with New, Elevated Experiences

Like Scenic Eclipse, Scenic Ikon will be among the best-equipped expedition ships at sea. With two Airbus helicopters, a custom-designed Triton AVA submersible, guests will be able to explore above and below the waves, not simply upon them.

New for Scenic Ikon, its helicopter program will take ultra-luxury exploration to extraordinary new heights. Guests taking advantage of the Pay in Full offers will enjoy a complimentary flight.

In addition, depending on the destination, Scenic Ikon will offer top suite guests exclusive helicopter landings at renowned golf courses, celebrated local restaurants, and historic landmarks, together with access to some of the world's most remote and breathtaking wilderness.

Scenic Ikon will also be equipped with a full complement of watersports equipment, Zodiacs, and luxurious superyacht Fassmer tenders.

Onboard Experience

Guests will enjoy dining in 15 distinctive venues, stay in luxuriously appointed suites, socialize in vibrant lounges and relaxation spaces, each reflecting Scenic's truly all-inclusive philosophy.

The spa on the new class of ship has grown to over 18,000 square feet over two levels, and includes hydrotherapy and thermal experiences, as well as signature treatments and world-class fitness offerings.

Each voyage will include all immersive excursions, exclusive events, and entertainment.

Inaugural Season

Scenic Ikon will embark on its inaugural voyage from Venice in April 2028, which has already sold out.

The new ship’s maiden season through March 2029 will span 110 ports, 21 countries, and 26 new destinations. Including the Mediterranean, Aegean and Egypt, the Cape Verde Islands, Dakar, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and the Chilean Fjords.

START YOUR TRIP!

By: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/ travel journalist and expert.

Scenic Ikon renderings courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

All rights reserved. Many of us have traveled to Greenland or the Canadian Arctic and have already tasted things like raw seal meat, almost a staple of Arctic expedition experiences. But they had us all onboard – and awed - with the very first bite!

START YOUR ARCTIC TRIP!

By: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/ travel journalist and expert

All rights reserved. According to one survey by a travel insurance company, nearly one-third of active social media users are at risk of a home break-in by alerting the bad guys through their posts. So, as high travel season approaches, social media experts are reminding travelers keen to share their vacation experiences to be aware of the risks of posting.

The survey by the Allstate Insurance Company reveals that:

Over half of those planning to travel out of the country this summer plan to post about their trip on social media.

Nearly 10% post before their trip to share their plans; and

Almost one-third post during their trip to show they are traveling – a number that climbs to nearly 40% among parents (as opposed to those traveling without kids).

Safety First

The problem, note experts, is that posting that selfie on the beach, cruise ship or in front of a famous landmark shines a bright spotlight on the fact that the poster’s home is empty – or even, in the case of posting before their trip – advertises a lengthy window when there will be no one at home! Criminals are no strangers to using the internet and social media for nefarious purposes, so those posts put your home at risk for break-ins and theft.

The insurance company’s own data reveals that, over the last decade, property theft has risen during summer holidays, peaking in August, making summer a critical time to prioritize home safety and security.

Ironically, that same survey shows that

A strong majority (62%) say their main concern is making sure their home is safe while they’re away; yet

15% shockingly say sharing on social media is a higher priority than protecting their homes from a break-in.

And while increasingly popular technology like smart cameras and alarm systems (in addition to old-fashioned helpful or nosy neighbors!) contribute to the security of homes while their residents are away, travelers should also take precautions to mitigate the risk of their social media posts.

Smart Use of Your Smart Phone

It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t post those incredible vacation pics. Just delay posts until you’re not showing your hand to potential thieves.

Here are some more tips from the experts for social media safe travel:

Not just when you travel abroad or during the holidays, but year-round, use your phone’s privacy settings to remove geolocation data from digital pictures and avoid sharing images of your street address or home number.

Before a trip, avoid posting countdowns. If you absolutely must, create a smaller trusted chat group to keep those closest to you informed of your plans.

Setting social media accounts to “private” rather than public allows more control over who sees your content. Even then, keep dates and other travel plans vague.

And of course, make sure everyone in your household is also following the same precautions!

START YOUR (SAFE!) So seeing either of them in the wild is a magical travel experience.

Unlike tuxedoed penguins with their mostly monochrome coloring, puffins are often called the “clowns of the sea” for their vivid, almost carnival mask-like countenance that livens up their pudgy, black-and-white bodies, not to mention their endearing facial expressions. That’s not all that makes these seabirds unique.

Puffin Particulars

Three Species of Puffins: We think of puffins as being residents of the North Atlantic, and the Atlantic puffin is the standard-bearer of the species. It can be found as far north as the Arctic Circle. But other types, including the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific.

Spend Most of Life at Sea: Puffins are “pelagic” and only return to land to breed, usually just a few months per year. Their breeding grounds seem ill-chosen: often rocky, seaside cliffs that look inhospitable and not the best place to raise a family!

Unusual Nesting Habits: Puffins dig burrows in grassy clifftops or use rock crevices to lay a single egg. They’re surprisingly good diggers, using their beaks and feet.

Expert Swimmers and Flyers: Puffins “fly” underwater by flapping their wings to pursue small fish. They can also fly in the air at up to 55 mph, beating their wings 400 times per minute, defying their shape, which doesn’t look very aerodynamic at all!

Beak Can Hold Multiple Fish: Thanks to a special hinge in their beak and spiny tongue, puffins can carry 10 or more fish crosswise at once without dropping any—ideal for feeding chicks.

Those Signature, Colorful Beaks: During breeding season, puffins display vividly colored orange, yellow, and blue beaks. But – fun fact - the color fades in winter, as the outer layers shed. So breeding season is the best time to see the puffin in full color, the way you imagine them.

Nicknames: In addition to “Clowns of the Sea,” puffins are also dubbed “Sea Parrots” for those technicolor beaks.

Monogamous and Loyal: Puffins often reunite with the same mate at the same burrow year after year.

Conservation Challenges: In some areas, puffin populations are declining due to climate change, overfishing (reducing their food supply), and invasive predators like rats on nesting islands.

*** Of course, if we are fortunate enough to get to see puffins in the wild, we want to make sure our travel experience doesn’t harm the puffins, especially since our best chances of seeing puffins are when the birds come ashore during the critical breeding season.

Where to See Puffins in the Wild

Best Time for Puffin-Viewing: Late spring to early summer (May–August) during the breeding season when they come ashore.

Where to Find Atlantic Puffins

Iceland: Home to the largest puffin population in the world. Try Látrabjarg cliffs in the Westfjords or the Westman Islands.

Scotland: Particularly on the Isle of Staffa, the Treshnish Isles, and Fair Isle.

Ireland: Skellig Michael and the Cliffs of Moher.

Norway: Runde Island is a great spot.

Newfoundland, Canada: Witless Bay Ecological Reserve near St. John's is a top destination.

Where to Find Pacific Puffins (Tufted and Horned Puffins)

Alaska: Best seen in Kenai Fjords, Kodiak Island, and the Pribilof Islands.

British Columbia, Canada: Haida Gwaii and coastal areas.

U.S. Pacific Northwest: Oregon’s Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach is a well-known nesting site.

START YOUR TRIP!

By: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/travel journalist and expert.

Images: Getty

All rights reserved. Or that we let even inexperienced travelers attach their own sticky paper luggage tags, willy-nilly, and just drop them on a conveyor belt, along with thousands of other travelers’ bags, all going to different destinations on different flights… and hope for the best that they’ll show up at the same time and place we do?

It honestly seems like a miracle that baggage so often turns out right rather than wrong.

How Much Luggage Gets Lost?

We’ve all heard horror stories in recent years. COVID and its aftermath wreaked havoc on air travel operations. They were dark years for luggage ‘mishandling,’ as the industry calls bags that are damaged, delayed or temporarily or permanently lost.

Some airlines – and some airports – do better than others. But overall, according to the SITA Global Baggage report, just under 7 bags for every 1000 air travelers worldwide were mishandled in 2023. That’s less than 1% - and a big improvement over the previous (pandemic aftermath) year. Still, that represents over 36 million pieces of luggage – and the tiny fraction is cold comfort if your bag is one of those that goes missing.

Operations improvements and new technology are leading the way in the war against lost luggage.

The Grassroots Air Tag Revolution

Some advances have been driven by travelers themselves.

It didn’t take long for savvy travelers to adapt handy air tag technology to track their personal bags as they flew – despite early pushback from quite a few airlines and jurisdictions. Their concern was apparently the batteries, an unfounded one, as many advocates pointed out.

Not only did airlines quietly stop banning AirTags, but many have done a 180-degree turn. Now, about a couple of dozen airlines make air tag tracking an official part of their lost luggage process, allowing passengers to share the location of missing bags from their app with their airline to help locate and retrieve their bags.

Unpacking a New Era in Baggage Handling

And most recently, the airline industry as a whole has begun a united charge to revolutionize luggage.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a 10-year “Global Baggage Roadmap” to modernize baggage operations around the world, with its member airlines, airports and industry partners all ‘weighing in’ on the best ways to make sure you and your bags reconnect no matter where and with whom you fly.

No surprise! IATA’s surveys show that:

81% of travelers want better tracking,

74% expect real-time updates on their mobile phones and

67% are willing to switch to electronic bag tags.

So IATA’s plan includes:

Baggage Information Standardization to harmonize how baggage information is shared among airlines, airports, and partners, replacing old legacy systems. This will even “significantly reduce the airline industry's annual spending of USD 1 billion on teletype messaging.” Teletype messaging? In 2025? Wow.

Real Time Baggage Tracking and Automation to provide visibility throughout the journey, using electronic baggage tags, GPS tracking, and robotics.

Streamlining the Baggage Claim Process and “enhancing the customer experience.” All those black bags, you don’t wonder how someone picks up the wrong one once in a while.

IATA thinks that within a decade, no matter where we fly around the world, our bags will be on a new, technology-driven journey right there with us.

START YOUR TRIP!

By: Lynn Elmhirst, travel journalist and expert.

Image: Getty

All rights reserved. This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from Europe this millennium! When you combine an extraordinary natural spectacle that may be best viewed at sea, with the popularity of European holidays, in the warm summer months… that’s a recipe for a must-book vacation of a lifetime.

Highlights of the August 12, 2026, Total Solar Eclipse

This eclipse presents a rare opportunity for observers in Europe and beyond to experience the awe-inspiring phenomenon of totality.

Path of Totality: The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Arctic Ocean, crossing remote regions of Siberia, and then proceed over Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, northern Spain, and a small part of Portugal. The path of totality is narrow, making precise location crucial for witnessing the full spectacle.

Duration and Timing: The maximum duration of totality will be approximately 2 minutes and 18 seconds, occurring just off the western coast of Iceland. Further south in the path of totality in Spain, totality will be visible for between 1 and 2 minutes, depending on the location.

Viewing Conditions: In Europe, including Iceland and Spain, the eclipse will take place in the afternoon, with the Sun low on the western horizon. This positioning can create dramatic atmospheric effects, enhancing your visual experience.

(Image: Princess Cruises)

Why View an Eclipse from a Cruise Ship?

Viewing a solar eclipse at sea offers several unique advantages:

Unobstructed View: Being on the open water means there are no buildings, trees, or other land-based obstacles to block your view of the eclipse. You get a clear, panoramic horizon that maximizes your experience.

Optimal Location along the Path of Totality: Being at sea allows you to be in an ideal spot to witness the event, especially if you're on a cruise or a specialized expedition that targets eclipse-viewing zones.

Escape from Light Pollution: If you're at sea, far away from city lights, you'll have a much darker sky, which allows you to fully appreciate the eclipse, especially the subtle changes in light and color around you.

Stable Viewing Conditions: While land-based observers might struggle with crowds or fluctuating weather conditions, being at sea can offer more stable conditions. A cruise ship can position itself to maximize clear skies for the eclipse.

Unique Atmosphere: The combination of the eclipse and the vast, open ocean creates a distinctive atmosphere. The contrast between the darkness of the eclipse and the stillness of the sea can make the experience feel even more profound and awe-inspiring.

Specialized Themed Sailings: Many cruise lines are offering special sailings with protective eyewear available and onboard experts to help you understand and appreciate the science behind the event. It can be an educational as well as a visual experience. Many turn it into a party, too!

With interest in this rare event high, booking ahead is essential. Here are some cruise lines offering solar eclipse sailings in 2026 in various locations along its path. Some offer enrichment opportunities, as well.

Some are already sold out!

So if you want to be in the best place to see the celestial event of a lifetime, don’t wait to plan where you want to be when the sun disappears in August 2026!

SEABOURN

Ultra-luxury cruise line Seabourn will position 2 of its classic ships for the eclipse. (Top image)

Seabourn Ovation will sail a 14-day West Ireland Gems & Solar Eclipse voyage, departing on August 8, 2026, from Dover, England, to Reykjavik, Iceland. The ship will visit unique ports in Western Ireland, including Galway and Killybegs, and position itself off the coast of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean to view the eclipse.

Seabourn will also host a special Seabourn Conversations program featuring Jane A. The all-new eclipse-themed voyage will find Seabourn Sojourn positioned in the Balearic Sea off the coast of Spain as the eclipse commences, which will be visible closer to the horizon near sunset.

Seabourn will host a special Seabourn Conversations program, featuring Dallas Campbell, a science presenter, author and broadcaster who will educate guests about the solar eclipse.

ATLAS OCEAN VOYAGES

Small expedition cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages has 2 ships sailing themed voyages in the path of the eclipse:

World Navigator is sailing a 9-night, round-trip Reykjavik Solar Eclipse Expedition August 11 – 20, 2026. As you navigate the Norwegian Sea from Iceland to Greenland alongside a resident astronomer, witness the spectacle of a total solar eclipse from the perfect location. Out on deck, surrounded by only the horizon, you will share that special moment when everyone looks to the sky for a celestial phenomenon guided by your astronomy expert.

After this incredible experience, the natural marvels and rich cultures of Iceland and Greenland beckon for exploration. Amid the fjords of Greenland, vast tundra and immense glaciers create the image of ultimate adventure. Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth is a science fiction classic, but the landscapes that inspired it are very real and found in Grundarfjörður.

World Traveller is sailing the 7-night Journey of the Solar Eclipse, Barcelona to Monte Carlo, August 9-16, 2026. Experience the wonder of a solar eclipse while navigating the ocean from Spain to France alongside a resident astronomer, your expedition guide. Viking Announces First Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship with Zero Emissions

Cruising just took a giant step towards becoming a lot cleaner and better for the environment and seas we love to sail. Viking and its shipbuilder, Fincantieri, have revealed they’re building the first-ever cruise ship powered by hydrogen, developed by a Fincantieri subsidiary specializing in advanced fuel cell technology.

That will allow the ship to operate with zero – yes, zero – emissions.

The ship has already been named the Viking Libra, and will be delivered, not years from now, but in 2026.

Zero emissions capabilities by 2026. That’s music to the ears of people who love to cruise but who also want to protect the world we explore.

Zero emissions will also allow the new ship to access even the most environmentally sensitive areas, opening up new – sustainable – cruise travel horizons for Viking passengers.

Viking isn’t stopping there. Its next ocean ship, the Viking Astrea, is also currently under construction. Scheduled for delivery in 2027, will also be hydrogen-powered.

The cruise line says it’s been focused on making progress in sustainability throughout Viking’s 30-year growth as a company.

“From the outset, we have designed our river and ocean ships thoughtfully to reduce their fuel consumption, and we are very proud the Viking Libra and the Viking Astrea will be even more environmentally friendly,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking.

“Viking made the principled decision to invest in hydrogen, which offers a true zero-emission solution.”

"With the Viking Libra, we are not only delivering the world's first cruise ship powered by hydrogen stored on board, but we are also reinforcing our commitment to shaping the future of sustainable maritime transportation,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

He says that Viking’s order of two additional ships “is a testament to our shared vision for a more sustainable cruise industry, as together we continue to set new standards for innovation and responsible shipbuilding."

Viking’s ocean ships are considered ‘small ships,’ and like her sister ships in the ocean fleet, the Viking Libra will host just under 1000 guests.

Viking and Fincantieri also announced two additional ocean ships for delivery in 2031 and an option for two additional ocean ships for delivery in 2033. With these orders, Viking will have 110 river ships by 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031.

More About Viking

Viking was founded in 1997 and provides destination-focused journeys on rivers, oceans, and lakes around the world in its river, ocean and expedition ships.

Designed for curious travelers with interests in science, history, culture and cuisine, Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen often says Viking offers experiences “For The Thinking Person.” Viking has more than 450 awards to its name, including being rated #1 for Rivers, #1 for Oceans and #1 for Expeditions by Condé Nast Traveler in the 2023 and 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards. Viking is also rated a “World’s Best” for rivers, oceans and expeditions by Travel + Leisure. No other travel company has simultaneously received the same honors from both publications.

START YOUR TRIP!

Image: Viking

All rights reserved. Ponant Inaugurates Icebreaking Winter Voyage

It's the first time ever that a cruise ship has navigated the frozen St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada - in the WINTER! Carving new horizons for small-ship, luxury expedition cruising even more than Antarctic and Arctic cruises, which are held during the summer months.

CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO FOR AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Ponant's CEO Herve Gastinel, on board Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot on the occasion of the inaugural icebreaking passage. We dive into what makes Le Commandant Charcot perhaps the only luxury, small expedition ship capable of pushing the boundaries of this kind of expedition cruising, and why Quebec, of all the winter maritime destinations in the world, attempted this incredible new feat of cruising.

Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot is a game-changer in expedition cruising, blending pioneering polar exploration with sustainable luxury. It was the world’s first luxury polar exploration cruise ship with a hybrid-electric, liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion system.

Here are more ways Le Commandant Charcot is unique:

1. Icebreaker Capabilities (watch the video for more!)

Unlike most expedition cruise ships, it is a Polar Class 2 (PC2) icebreaker, meaning it can navigate deep into Arctic and Antarctic ice.

Allows for unprecedented access to remote locations, such as reaching the Geographic North Pole.

2. Hybrid LNG-Electric Propulsion

Uses LNG, which reduces emissions compared to conventional fuels.

Electric battery hybrid system enhances efficiency and allows short silent, zero-emission cruising.

3. Luxury Meets Exploration (check out the interiors in the video!)

Ponant combines high-end luxury with serious scientific research capabilities.

Features spacious suites with private balconies, a spa, fine dining, and lounges.

Carries scientific labs and equipment for onboard researchers.

4. Eco-Friendly & Sustainable Design

Equipped with advanced waste management and water treatment systems.

Reduced fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions through dynamic positioning instead of anchoring.

5. Cutting-Edge Scientific Contribution

Hosts scientists and researchers to study climate change and polar ecosystems.

Allows passengers to participate in citizen science programs.

6. Unmatched Polar Itineraries

One of the only passenger ships able to reach the Geographic North Pole.

Explores Greenland, Antarctica, the Ross Sea, and the remote Arctic regions.

START YOUR LUXURY EXPEDITION CRUISE!

By: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/ travel journalist.

All rights reserved. The voyage will aim to proceed (weather permitting) eastward towards Kritøya, circling around Austfonna, one of the largest glaciers on the planet. Throughout, the aim will be to encounter and observe a diverse array of Arctic wildlife, including polar bears, walruses, puffins, and arctic foxes, amidst the stunning backdrop of sea ice platforms and calving glaciers. With Svalbard boasting an astounding 2100 glaciers, this expedition promises an unparalleled natural spectacle.

Hosted by Dr. Sylvia Earle in her 90th birthday year, this expedition will honor Dr. Earle’s lifelong advocacy for the world’s oceans by inviting changemaker passengers to use their own voice, contributing their various talents or ‘superpowers’ to instigate meaningful conversations and spur action to safeguard the planet for future generations. This voyage takes place on Aurora’s Sylvia Earle which was named in her honor. See the above article for more on this incredible ship.

BIG ACE seeks to lobby for the protection of the Arctic, foster a collective appreciation of our planet’s fragility and mitigate the impact of climate change through the power of the arts. The Arctic, where warming occurs at a rate four to five times greater than the global average, is undergoing significant degradation.

As a Certified B Corporation™, Aurora is committed to driving positive change and contributing to a more sustainable future. My recent voyage with Aurora Cruises aboard the Sylvia Earle, from June 10 to 24, 2024, was nothing short of spectacular. This journey offered unparalleled experiences, from exhilarating zodiac excursions to rare landings on pristine islands, leaving me with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the Arctic's raw beauty.

The Sylvia Earle: A Perfect Vessel for Polar Exploration

The Sylvia Earle, named after the renowned marine biologist and oceanographer, is a state-of-the-art expedition ship designed specifically for polar voyages. With a maximum passenger capacity of 130 and eco-friendly features (the only ship to be a Certified B Corporation), the ship offers a luxurious yet intimate experience. Its Ulstein X-BOW design cuts through ice with ease, ensuring a smoother transit while minimizing its environmental impact. The staterooms are spacious and comfortable. It was the friendliest and most helpful staff I have encountered on any ship and the expedition team was exceptional. The lectures are both informative and entertaining and there is also a science center.

Exploring Svalbard: Zodiac Excursions and Hikes

One of the highlights of the cruise was the daily zodiac excursions, which allowed us to explore the icy waters and dramatic landscapes of Svalbard up close. These small, inflatable boats are perfect for navigating the narrow fjords and ice-strewn channels that larger vessels cannot access. With our expert guides, we encountered breathtaking glaciers, towering icebergs, and abundant wildlife, including seals, walruses, and even the elusive polar bear.

This small ship allows all passengers to venture out multiple times during the day because there are enough zodiacs for everyone. Some passengers opted for kayaks instead, and there were special zodiacs for the serious photographers among us.

Some Zodiac excursions were cruises around the archipelago, where we admired the ice formations, birds, and other animals. On this voyage,, we had several polar bear sightings, which were one of the highlights of the expedition.

Other Zodiac adventures allowed for landings where passengers could opt for short, medium or long hikes. Aurora always provides choices for different abilities. The silence and solitude of the Arctic landscape were awe-inspiring, a stark reminder of the Earth's pristine wilderness and its fragility.

Bird Watching at Alkefjellet

Among the many unforgettable experiences, bird watching at Alkefjellet stands out as a highlight. This dramatic cliff face, home to thousands of breeding seabirds, is one of Svalbard's most significant bird cliffs. As we approached Alkefjellet by zodiac, the sight of the sheer rock wall teeming with life was breathtaking. We observed thousands of Brünnich's guillemots perched on narrow ledges, their distinctive calls filling the air. The spectacle of these agile birds navigating the cliffside, diving into the frigid waters below, and flying overhead was mesmerizing. It was a unique opportunity to witness the vibrant avian life of the Arctic in such close proximity.

A Landmark Landing on Kvitøya

A standout moment of the journey was our unprecedented landing on Kvitøya, a rarely visited island covered almost entirely by an ice cap. It is the most remote island of Svalbard and the place where Salomon Andree, Strindberg and Frankel died during their North Pole expedition in 1897. The ideal weather conditions allowed us a rare opportunity to set foot on this icy outpost and hike to the monument erected in their honor.

Why Others Should Embark on This Arctic Expedition

This cruise with Aurora Cruises aboard the Sylvia Earle is not just a trip; it's an expedition into one of the planet's last great wildernesses. The experience of navigating the Arctic waters, encountering unique wildlife, and stepping foot on seldom-visited islands like Kvitøya is unparalleled. The ship's expert crew and knowledgeable guides ensure a safe, informative, and enriching journey, making it an ideal choice for both seasoned adventurers and those new to polar exploration.

For those seeking an authentic Arctic experience, this Svalbard cruise offers a rare glimpse into a world few have seen. The chance to witness the region's stunning landscapes, learn about its fragile ecosystems, and appreciate its history makes this journey a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. With the right preparation, you'll be ready to face the polar extremes and enjoy every moment of your journey.

Here's a comprehensive guide on what to pack for your polar expedition cruise.

1. Clothing: Layering for Success

The key to staying warm in polar climates is layering. This approach allows you to adjust your clothing based on varying temperatures and activities.

• Base Layer: You should opt for moisture-wicking materials such as merino wool or synthetic fabrics. These will keep you dry by moving sweat away from your skin.

• Mid Layer: Insulating layers like fleece or down jackets are essential. They trap heat and provide the necessary warmth.

• Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof shell jacket and pants are crucial to protect you from the elements. Look for breathable fabrics with sealed seams. Most expedition cruise lines will provide you with an expedition parka for use as your top outer layer. You may want an additional warm jacket for pre and post-cruise. You will need to bring waterproof pants as your outer bottom layer.

• Additional Layers: Include thermal underwear, extra sweaters, and insulated vests for added warmth.

2. Footwear: Sturdy and Insulated

Your feet need to stay warm and dry, especially during land excursions.

• Shoes and Boots: Insulated, waterproof boots with good grip are vital. They should be comfortable for walking on ice and snow. Your cruise will most likely provide muck boots for you to use during your cruise while on excursions. You may want your own boots for pre and post-cruise. Slip-proof boots or athletic shoes can be used while on the ship. Check with your advisor to see if you need other shoes for the evening. Never pack too many shoes for any cruise!

• Socks: Bring multiple pairs of thermal and moisture-wicking socks. Layering thin-liner socks with thicker thermal socks can provide extra warmth.

3. Accessories: Keeping Extremities Warm

Don’t overlook the importance of protecting your extremities from the cold.

• Gloves: Pack both thin-liner gloves and insulated, waterproof outer gloves. Make sure your gloves will allow you to use your phone for picture taking.

• Hats: A warm hat that covers your ears is essential. Consider packing a backup in case one gets wet. I recommend a beanie without a pom pom. It is easy to pack and won’t get in the way of the hood from your expedition jacket.

• Scarves and Neck Gaiters: These protect your neck and face from wind and cold.

• Sunglasses and Goggles: Polarized sunglasses to protect against glare from the ice and snow. Goggles are useful for windy conditions. You may want to pack an eyeglass chain so you don’t lose them.

4. Specialty Gear: Optional Expedition Essentials

Certain items are specific to the unique environment of a polar expedition.

• Binoculars: Essential for spotting wildlife and distant landscapes.

• Dry Bags: Keep your gear and electronics dry during wet landings and excursions.

• Waterproof Backpack: A small, waterproof backpack is handy for day trips and landings.

• Walking Poles: Collapsible walking poles can provide stability on uneven terrain.

5. Personal Items: Comfort and Convenience

A few personal touches can greatly enhance your comfort and experience.

• Skincare: Pack high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm to protect against strong UV rays reflecting off the ice.

• Medications: Bring any personal medications, plus seasickness remedies if you're prone to motion sickness.

• Camera Gear: Capture stunning landscapes and wildlife with a good camera, extra batteries, and memory cards.

• Books and Entertainment: Long travel times between excursions can be spent reading or enjoying other personal entertainment.

Final Tips

• Check with Your Travel Advisor: Make sure you understand what is provided and what you should pack.

• Pack Light but Smart: Focus on versatile, high-quality items that can be layered and reused.

• Evening Wear: Most expedition cruises are extremely casual, even at night.

Usually, sweats and comfortable clothing are acceptable throughout. However, there is a variance in clothing suggestions for different cruise lines. Your travel advisor will be able to assist with exactly what you need for your adventure.

Your Best Expedition Cruises advisor will always provide you with a more specific list for your voyage

In the 21st century, it’s hard to imagine there’s a place on earth humans have never been, but close to the end of the 2024 Arctic cruise/ sailing season, the polar expedition cruise ship pulled off a ‘Star Trek’ of an accomplishment, going “where no man had ever gone before.”

That place was the “North Pole of Inaccessibility,” one of the most elusive and remote points on Earth. It’s the farthest point in the Arctic Ocean from any land or accessible water.

During her expedition from Nome, Alaska, to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Le Commandant Charcot not only conquered the North Pole of Inaccessibility but also crossed two additional historic markers: the Magnetic North Pole and the Geographic North Pole.

But both of those points on the globe have been previously achieved by humans. In a monumental achievement – especially for a cruise ship with guests on board – French-flagged Le Commandant Charcot carved its name into the world’s exploration history books and marked a new chapter in the history of polar navigation.

The North Pole of Accessibility is a place few dared to imagine reaching – and certainly not guests of a cruise ship – no matter that it’s a Polar Class 2 icebreaking ship.

According to Ponant, the guests, crew and an international team of 20 scientists on board were all equally awed by the momentous occasion – a feat “many believed impossible.”

“Reaching the North Pole of Inaccessibility is a moment of rare intensity. Above all, it is a collective adventure, made possible thanks to Ponant’s passion and expertise,” said the ship’s Captain Étienne Garcia.

How Many North Poles Are There?

Geographers describe 3 North Poles:

The geographic North Pole is the North on maps. It lies in the middle of the Arctic Ocean.

The magnetic North Pole is the point that attracts the needle of a compass. It was discovered in 1831 in the Canadian High Arctic. It’s apparently moving towards Russia at a rate of 25 miles a year!

The North Pole of Inaccessibility is even harder to pin down. It is located on constantly-moving Arctic Ocean pack ice at a distance farthest from any landmass. Its coordinates are 85°48’ North, 176°09’ East and it’s over 600 miles from the three closest landmasses.

While attempts have been made for over a century, no human has ever set foot on that spot on the planet, although, almost a century ago, in 1927, Hubert Wilkins flew over this Pole of Inaccessibility for the first time in a plane.

This incredible feat obviously isn’t easy. And only a very specific kind of ship could ever hope to nail it. Le Commandant Charcot isn’t just specifically designed for polar expeditions, as are other polar expedition ships. While one of a fleet of elegant, French-flagged 14 Ponant ships, she is the only vessel of her kind, an actual icebreaker, equipped with a Polar Class 2 (PC2) hull, which enables her to navigate the most extreme conditions with minimal environmental impact. Powered by a cutting-edge hybrid electric engine and fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the vessel exemplifies sustainable exploration in the modern age.

This expedition not only opened a new frontier in polar exploration and expedition cruising but also set a precedent for future scientific endeavors. During the stop at the North Pole of Inaccessibility, the team of international scientists onboard collected critical data from these uncharted waters, furthering our understanding of this remote region’s ecosystems and climate.

It’s extraordinary to think that not only did humans just in 2024 achieve this monumental moment of exploration, but that it was achieved by an expedition cruise ship with guests on board who literally have bragging rights even professional explorers can’t match!

START YOUR EXPEDITION CRUISE TRIP!

Images courtesy of Ponant.

All rights reserved. But on the other side of the world, in another extraordinary landscape, the can’t miss, iconic wildlife is summed up on the ‘Big 15’ list. Many are found nowhere else on earth other than in the Galapagos islands.

Their unparalleled biodiversity famously inspired Darwin’s theory of evolution. No wonder these remote Ecuadorian islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a protected marine preserve, and the ultimate travel aspiration for nature lovers.

Here’s the Galapagos "Big 15" check list of species, renowned for their unique characteristics, evolutionary significance, and endemic nature.

The Galapagos ‘Big 15’:

Galapagos Giant Tortoise - Known for their long lifespan and massive size, they are found only in the Galapagos archipelago.

Marine Iguana - The world’s only sea-going iguana is also only encountered in these islands, often seen basking on rocks.

Land Iguana - Found on several islands, feeding on cacti.

Santa Fe Land Iguana - An endemic species limited to Santa Fe Island.

Galapagos Penguin - The only penguin found north of the equator.

Flightless Cormorant - Evolved to lose flight but developed exceptional swimming ability.

Waved Albatross - Found mainly on Española Island, known for their elaborate courtship dances.

Blue-footed Booby - Famous for their bright blue feet and amusing mating dance.

Nazca Booby - The largest booby in the archipelago, with striking black-and-white plumage.

Red-footed Booby - The only booby with red feet, known for perching in trees.

Frigatebird - Males have a red throat pouch they inflate to attract females.

Galapagos Hawk - The top predator on the islands, known for preying on reptiles and small birds.

American Flamingo - Seen wading in brackish lagoons, with stunning pink feathers.

Galapagos Sea Lion - Playful and curious, often seen on beaches and swimming with snorkelers.

Galapagos Fur Seal - Smaller and more elusive than the sea lion, they prefer rocky shores.

Not only can you see these marvels of nature in their native environment, but without natural predators, much of Galapagos wildlife is fearless, allowing responsible visitors close encounters we normally don’t associate with seeing animals in the wild. They un-self-consciously go about their daily business in a way that allows visitors to observe their natural behaviors, much the same way Darwin did, allowing him was able to identify how some species uniquely adapted to their specific environments (for example, the different beak shapes of Darwin’s finches.)

Traveling to the Galapagos is more than just a vacation—it's an immersive journey into the heart of one of the world’s most unique ecosystems, from dramatic lava fields and black-sand beaches created by ancient volcanic activity to lush highlands, all surrounded by one of the world’s richest marine environments.

Whether you’re an animal lover, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for an unforgettable adventure, the Galapagos offers a profound and enriching experience.

START YOUR GALAPAGOS VOYAGE!

Image: Getty

All rights reserved. In languages around the world, ‘fjord’ means a deep, natural sea channel reaching far inland, surrounded by dramatic cliffs carved millennia ago by glaciers on their way to the sea.

According to Visit Norway, the word ‘fjord’ has Viking roots, relating to the phrase for a ‘crossing point.’

The vast system of fjords along Norway’s coast certainly helps explain ancient Norse seafaring culture; skillful travel over water would be much better than trying to travel around steep cliffs by land.

Fjords are also the reason travel – especially cruise travel – to Norway is high on many travel bucket lists. They not only define Norway’s geography but also are the icon of its natural beauty and have shaped Norwegian cultural heritage.

Exactlty How Many Fjords are in Norway?

Norway has over 1000 fjords, each poking into the coastal landscape like a finger. As the crow flies, the country’s coast is about 15,500 miles long. But if you were to straighten out all the fjords, it would be more than 3 times that length – over 51,000 miles long!

Norway’s Four Most Famous Fjords

1. Sognefjord is the “King of Fjords” and the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. It extends over 124 miles inland and reaches depths of 4300 feet! The fjord's landscape, with its glaciers, waterfalls, and fertile valleys, makes it a symbol of Norway’s natural beauty. While sailing the fjord is a ‘must,’ there are more ways to experience Sognefjord: from hiking in the Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen national parks to visiting the historic Stave Churches in Urnes and Borgund.

Geirangerfjord, cruising past Brudesløret waterfall; image copyright: Øyvind Heen - fjords.com

2. Geirangerfjord is possibly even more famous than Sognefjord, this UNESCO-listed natural wonder is renowned for its stunning beauty (pictured above). Cruising through this fjord, visitors are treated to panoramic views of cascading waterfalls like the Seven Sisters, the Suitor, and the Bridal Veil. The deep blue waters, set against its emerald cliffs, create unforgettable memories and photo opportunities. Geirangerfjord is also home to charming villages and historic farms that cling precariously to the steep slopes, offering a glimpse into traditional Norwegian life.

3. Nærøyfjord is another UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the narrowest in Europe, and its awe-inspiring scenery is best experienced from the water. The journey through Nærøyfjord showcases towering rock faces, lush valleys, and tranquil waters, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers and photographers. The small village of Gudvangen at the fjord’s end is a perfect base for exploring the area further.

4. Hardangerfjord has a character all its own, with a famous waterfall and glacier, renowned for cliffside fruit orchards and as the starting point for Norway’s most epic hiking trail. The stunning natural beauty of Hardangerfjord’s steep cliffs is transformed every spring, when apple, cherry and pear orchards cover the dramatic landscape with a lacy, fairy tale display of white and pink blossoms. The festivities of the Hardanger Blossom Festival add to the scenery for this magical time of the year. Hardangerfjord is also the origin of the iconic Trolltunga hike. The payoff of the hike is the Trolltunga (Troll’s Tongue) rock formation (pictured, top), which juts horizontally out like the mountain is sticking out its tongue!

A cruise along the coast of Norway takes you into the heart of its scenic fjord land- and seascapes, where calls in ports give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Norway’s rich cultural heritage, enjoy local cuisine including fresh seafood and traditional Norwegian dishes, and explore up close with outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking.

START YOUR TRIP!

Top Image copyright: Trolltunga Active

All rights reserved.

They trap heat and provide necessary warmth.

• Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof shell jacket and pants are crucial to protect you from the elements. Look for breathable fabrics with sealed seams.

Most expedition cruise lines will provide you with an expedition parka for use as you top outer layer. You may want an additional warm jacket for pre and post cruise.

You may want your own boots for pre and post cruise. Slip proof boots or athletic shoes can be used while on the ship. Check with your advisor to see if you need other shoes for evening. Never pack too many shoes for any cruise!

• Socks: Bring multiple pairs of thermal and moisture-wicking socks. Layering thin liner socks with thicker thermal socks can provide extra warmth.

3. Accessories: Keeping Extremities Warm

Don’t overlook the importance of protecting your extremities from the cold.

• Gloves: Pack both thin liner gloves and insulated, waterproof outer gloves.

• Camera Gear: Capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife with a good camera, extra batteries, and memory cards.

Usually sweats and comfortable clothing are acceptable throughout. However there is variance in clothing suggestions for different cruise lines. Your travel advisor will be able to assist with exactly what you need for your adventure.

Your Best Expedition Cruises advisor will always provide you with a more specific list for your voyage.

I travel solo and it’s hard to find cruises that don’t charge me double. Diane is always on the look out for waived single supplements for me. She knew I was looking for an Iceland expedition cruise and sent me a Ponant cruise with no single supplement. She also sends me an app for my phone that has all my travel information on it for every trip I book. Her knowledge and service is top notch.

She’s a pro- I can’t recommend her highly enough.

There are so many choices for expedition cruises and I got so confused. Fortunately, I found Diane Ross and Best Expedition Cruises. She asked me so many questions about the type of experience I was looking for. Diane then narrowed it down and offered me 2 options highlighting the benefits of each. Based on that I chose an Antarctica cruise on Aurora with a flyover in one directions. She’s a pro- I can’t recommend her highly enough.

5 star all the way

I’ve been booking with Kingsbridge Travel for year and was excited to see Diane is now specializing in expedition cruises. I decided to take my granddaughter to the Galapagos. Diane recommended Tauck Bridges which wasn’t even on my radar. It was the perfect choice for us. 5 star all the way.

Panama and Colombia: Exploring the Caribbean Coast

Ship: National Geographic Quest

Highlights

Transit the Panama Canal over two days to see it by day and in the coolness of night

Visit the palm-shaded Panamanian archipelago of Guna Yala (formerly San Blas Islands), an autonomous province that is home to the Guna people, and get immersed in local culture.

Discover the coastal treasures and remote wilderness of Colombia, exploring vibrant villages, pristine beaches, and wildlife-rich jungles.

Explore Colombia's rainforests, brimming with roughly 1,900 bird species, like the Emerald Toucanet and Passerines, and more than 450 fascinating mammals, like the Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth and Northern Tamandua
